What is the best bait to trap a rat?

When it comes down to it, the bait you use to trap your rat isn’t actually that important. A rat is a rodent - a scavenger - and it will eat a great number of foods that the likes of you and I would most definitely turn our noses up at. Food thrown in the garbage, for example, or even food that has been thrown away down the sink. Haven’t you ever wondered why there are so many rats in the sewer systems? There’s almost an endless supply of waste food down there, and as long as it still offers some nutritional value, the rats WILL eat it. They have even been known to eat things such as feces from cats, dogs, and humans that have made their way into the sewer systems.

Before we get into the subject of foods that you should use as bait to trap a rat, let’s first start with the foods you probably shouldn’t …

Jam and other sweet foods
If you place these down, you’re going to attract rats for sure, but you’re also likely to attract a whole bunch of there critters that we’re sure you don’t want around. Sweet foods attract bees and wasps, and then you’ll have a rat to deal with then, or rats, and also a small but slowly-growing wasp / bee problem too.

Fresh fruit and vegetables
In fact, any fresh food is a bad idea, just because of the speed at which the state of the food will rapidly decline. It won’t take for fresh vegetables and fruit to grow mould, and then, just like the sweet foods, you’ll have another problem on your hands. Instead of bees and wasps this time, however, you’ll probably encounter flies. And you know what flies bring - maggots.

For the same reason, you should avoid meats. While we’re on the subject of meats …

Meats
These will attract rats, admittedly, but using meats, even in the form of cat and dog food, will often attract other animals once again. Not just flies and bees or wasps, you’ll encourage the likes of rogue raccoons and pesky opossums to take a closer look, and you may even find your household cat or dog taking a closer look to investigate.

What is the best bait to trap a rat?
We would recommend peanut butter. It doesn’t grow bad too quickly, and although sweet, isn’t likely to encourage a bunch of flies or wasps, unlike other preserves.

If all else fails, give us a call. It might not just be the bait that is making the rat avoid the trap. It could be that the traps have been placed in the wrong spots.
